Because depression is a common disorder, it is oftentimes dismissed or discounted. Sometimes well meaning family or friends think that your depression is simply a matter of you being in your own head or a funk that you need to snap out of. However, there are quite a few things that are more harmful than helpful to say to someone that is going through a depressive time. Things such as:
-Just stop thinking about all your problems
-Stay positive
-I know how you feel
-Count your blessings
-It could be worse
-Get over it
These types of comments can lead to the person in the depression to feel unheard, unsupported and misunderstood. Instead of trying to give advice, simply offering support and a friendly shoulder will go a long way. Try replacing the above comments with things like:
-How can I help?
-I’m sorry you’re hurting, I’m here for you.
-Tell me more about what you are going through.
-Can I keep you company this week?
– Can I bring you dinner?
-Thank you for sharing this with me so I can understand a little of what you are going through.
